Recent findings have revealed that Mayo has the highest number of alcohol related deaths in the country, a startling, bleak figure, which shows the misuse of alcohol in the county and the need to address our society’s issue with alcohol. Locally, support and leadership is needed to make this happen and through the work of the Western Region Drugs Task Force, via their community liaison worker, help and advice is at hand.

One in five driven by drug drivers

Research commissioned by the Road Safety Authority among 17- to 34-year-olds into the use of illegal drugs while driving has highlighted alarming behaviour, with as many as one in five admitting they were a passenger in a car driven by someone under the influence of drugs. The publication of the research comes as the RSA broadcasts a new anti-drug driving TV campaign.

Kenny welcomes ban on ‘party drug’ ingredient

The Fine Gael Leader Enda Kenny TD has welcomed the ban on benzylpiperazine, the active ingredient used in many party drugs sold over the counter in so-called Head shops. The substance was never included in the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977 and therefore could be sold legally despite many health organisations identifying numerous health risks to be associated with the use of these drugs.
